Cuddle Starfall Quilt Tutorial

Hi!  I'm Kelly from  Kelbysews and I'm going to show you another great way to use the  Cuddle™ kits you can find at  Shannon Fabrics.

KelbySewsCuddleStarBlanket
For this project I used the Leo the Lion kit because I loved all the bright colors and fun textures.  I chose one of the fabrics to use as my binding so I set it aside.  I also used about 2 yards of of Cuddle 3 Aqua for the front and back of the quilt.

First, using the star pattern provided, create two templates from template plastic or cardboard.  You can find template plastic at most craft stores and you simply trace and cut out the shape.  This method can work for any shape you choose!  Next, trace the shape on the back of the various fabrics in the kit and cut them out.   I highly recommend using sharp fabric scissors or a rotary cutter.  There is no "correct" number of stars.  I used 8 large stars and 5 small ones for my blanket, but you can use more or less.

Next, cut out a 2 pieces of solid Cuddle 36" square, one for the front and one for the back.  This is just my preferred baby blanket size, you can make yours bigger if you want!  Take your stars and arrange them however you'd like.  Use spray adhesive (my personal favorite is 505 Spray and Fix by Odif) to stick the stars in place.  Using the same spray adhesive, I attached the front of the blanket to a piece of batting about 40" square.

Now it's time to appliqué!  You can find tips and trick on how to appliqué with Cuddle here.  In this case, the appliqué is also attaching the front of the blanket to the batting.  I used a zig-zag stitch with my walking foot to make the process go more smoothly.
After appliquéing the stars, this is what the back of my blanket looked like.  Trim the excess batting from the edges and attach the other 36" square of solid Cuddle to the back of the blanket using the spray adhesive.  Now all you have to do is bind it and it's ready to snuggle!  I cut 3 strips 2"xWOF and followed the tips on how to bind with Cuddle found HERE.

I had a hard time getting a picture because my four year old kept wanting to rub his face all over it!  ha ha!  It's so amazingly soft!

I used scraps to make a small lovey-sized star blanket that is 11.5"x15".   No batting necessary for this little guy!

Once the star is appliquéd to the front, I placed the backing right side down on top, sewed around the edges leaving a small opening for flipping.  Once flipped right side out, topstitch along all the edges to sew the opening closed.  Ta-da, a lovey from scraps!

This blanket and lovey would make a great gift for any baby!
