Resizing
I was able to print all 3 sizes of the pattern from my home printer using the PDF pattern. For the original size you will print at 100% and assemble the pattern as instructed.
For the mini stocking I printed the pattern at 50% scale resulting in a stocking measuring 4” x 6”.
For the extra large stocking I opened the pattern in the free version of Abode Acrobat Reader and went to the print settings. I increased the size to 150% and chose the poster format for printing. It printed out each page of the stocking pattern on 4 pieces of paper. While it doesn’t print markings for connecting the pages I was able to trim and tape them together without issue—plus close counts on this project. The extra large stocking measured about 12” x 21”.
Stocking Assembly
This pattern is well written and easy to follow, additionally there is a video available:
Instead of walking you through the pattern, I’m going to walk you through what I did differently from the pattern for the resized stockings.
How to Make a Mini Cuddle® Christmas Stocking – 4” x 6”
This mini stocking turned out so cute! It would be perfect for slipping a gift card and a couple candy canes in. They would also make an adorable garland, countdown calendar, or ornament!
To find the cuff size I measured the opening for the stocking main and added 1 inch for seam allowance (½ inch seam allowance). I used my ruler to determine how long I wanted the cuff to be and then multiplied that by 2 and added 1 inch for the seam allowance. The piece I cut was 8 inches long by 4 ½ inches wide. ***See note on cuff size below.***
I also used some of the scraps from the satin to create the hanger instead of using ribbon. I just sewed a narrow tube and turned it and added it according to the directions.
I did not use batting for this size and would not recommend it. It would be very hard to sew and turn.
I used a ¼ inch seam allowance around the mail body and lining of the stocking.
Sewing the cuff to the mini stocking was tricky. Go very slow and make sure to keep the backside of the project out of the way….and your fingers. Luckily it is a very short distance to sew, so even at a snails pace it goes pretty quickly!
Extra Large Stocking – 12” x 21”
This is a great size to use for bigger kids, Christmas morning, or as a reusable gift bag!
Again, I followed the pattern and calculated the cuff in the same way as above. My cuff measurement was 23 inches x 10 ½ inches for this one.***
I found using a ¼ inch seam allowance on the satin lining fit better for me (that also applies to the original size pattern.
I added understitching to hold the lining in the stocking better. To do this flip up the cuff and sew the lining to the stocking main right next to the seam. I would also recommend doing this to the original size. It resulted it a very professional looking finish.
***Note: Make sure to do the math and calculate your cuff size when changing the size for the pattern. All printers may not resize the same. ***
I hope you enjoyed this stocking project! Hope you enjoy making this as much as I did. Stay tuned to see what is in store for the rest of the 12 Days of Cuddle! Happy Holidays!
