One of the teams playing in this year's big game has this eye-catching color combo: Red, yellow and black! The talented Susan Hastings quilted a variety of game-day themed shapes throughout this blanket. Cuddle® is an awesome choice for quilters, and the way the shapes show up on this C3 and satin is striking and unique. Quilting on Cuddle® adds an extra touch of personalization that makes your projects as special as they are cozy!  Cuddle® up on the couch and enjoy the game with a custom quilted Satin/C3 KC Self-binding Baby Blanket and Strip Quilt.

Get ready for the big game with a Football Tote Bag! The quilting pattern for a Football Table Runner can be found at Sweet Dreams Quilt Studio.

I had some C390 on hand in Kelly. The original design measures 40” x 18”. I made a couple of runners with the C390 and Quilters Dream Batting Poly Batting and then finished with binding. I thought how cute it would be to make a Tote Bag. I couldn’t find a simple pattern, so I just made one up that I would like to share. I reduced the design to 34 ½” x 15 ½” to make a smaller tote. Finished size 15 ½” tall, 14” wide and depth of 4 ½”.

Supplies Used

  • Longarm Quilting Machine
  • Quilting Thread
  • Sewing Machine
  • Design from Sweet Dreams
  • C390 – 2/3 yard (Cut scraps – 1 ¾” strips)
  • Soft and Stable by Annie 45” x 24”
  • Luxe Cuddle® Marble Chocolate 3” strip
  • Quilting and Sewing Polyester Thread
  • 2 yards of 1” Webbing for handles
  • Clips
  • Cutting Mat and Rotary Cutter

How to Make the Football Field Inspired Table Runner/Tote Bag

Cut the C390 in half widthwise (45” x 24”). Attach the 45” cut edge to the leader (face down), making sure the nap comes towards you. Put the piece of Soft and Stable on top of backing. Place the other piece of the Cuddle® face up with nap coming towards you. Baste at the top. Quilt the top with the football design. Note: There will be lots of thread cuts where you will need to pull up your bobbin.

Once design is completed trim top and sides to 1” of stitched line making careful that the top nap is coming down before cutting. Note: the quilted piece would be reversible if it was cotton, but the nap makes it directional. The bottom will be trimmed to 2” of the stitched line (Picture 1.) Zig Zag on all four edges (5.0mm stitch length and width). This will keep the Cuddle® edges nice and help reduce some of the bulk.

Fold the field in half with the right sides together and the end zones matching (Picture 2) Sew ½” seam. I finish the seam with scrap pieces of the C390 cut into strips of 1 ¾”. Sew one side and flip to the other side and attach it with a zig zag stitch (Picture 3). Finishing seams is optional, but I like the look of finished edges.

Clip the bottom right sides together and sew ½” seam allowance. Box the bottom of the bag by marking a box of 2” at the bottom and 2” from the side (Picture 4). Cut the box out. Add Strip to finish the bottom edge as you did on the side. Fold the box out together and sew then add binding to finish.

Cut the webbing in half to make 2 – 1-yard handles. Clip the webbing 2 ½” on either side of the center. Make sure the straps are not twisted. Attach on the inside of the bag using an X to reinforce the straps (Picture 5).

Note: you can make to the Football at 50 yard if you put the seam at the back of the tote as opposed to the side.
