Cuddle® Halloween Tote Bag Tutorial

This tutorial is for a 15 inch x 15” tote. You can change the size of your tote by

increasing or decreasing the length and/or width to accommodate your preferences

or the occasion!

½ inch seam allowances are recommended.

Materials needed:

● 2 pieces of 16” x 16” C3 Cuddle® Fabric for the front and back of your tote. You can choose to

do some sewing machine or embroidery machine applique to either or both of the front and

back pieces before sewing your tote together.

● Applique designs shown are from www.DesignsbyBabymoon.com

● 2 pieces of 16” x 16” Silky Satin® for the lining of the tote, or coordinating C3 Cuddle®,

Sparkle Cuddle, or a quilting cotton print.

● 2 pieces of 3.5”” x 26” C3 Cuddle® fabric for the straps.

● Coordinating polyester 40 wt sewing thread

● Sewing machine with walking foot installed

● 90/14 Stretch Needle

● Optional - Odif 505 temporary glue stick and Odif 505 Temporary Spray Adhesive

● Fusible Medium Weight Interfacing like Sulky Soft and Sheer Extra (if doing machine

embroidery on the C3 Cuddle® fabric or Pellon Shape Flex SF101.

● Optional - Fusible Fleece or Soft and Stable foam interfacing.

● Stiletto from By Annie

● Clover Wonder Clips

● Strap interior material: choose either Soft and Stable foam interfacing from By Annie or 1 inch

wide nylon webbing for interior of straps, 2 26” long pieces that are 1” wide

● Iron set for low to medium heat.

Sewing Instructions:

1. Using a low to medium heat setting on your iron, fuse the interfacing to the wrong sides of the
lining fabric pieces and the outer fabric pieces. This provides extra stability to the tote bag. If
you desire more stiffness, then use the Odif 505 Temporary Adhesive Spray to adhere By
Annie’s Soft and Stable to the wrong side of the lining fabric instead of the fusible interfacing.
Sew the lining fabrics together by stitching down each side and across the bottom. If you used
Soft and Stable on the lining, grade the seam allowances by trimming away most of the Soft
and Stable that is left in the seam allowances.

2. Using a 3.5mm stitch length and a straight stitch, Sew the outer fabrics together by stitching
down each side and then across the bottom. Set aside the lining and outer fabric bag parts.

3. Prepare the straps by laying your strap material face down on your work surface. Center the
strap material (either a Soft and Stable 1 inch x 26 inch piece or a piece of the nylon webbing)
on the wrong side of the strap exterior material. Using the Odif 505 glue stick, dot several
places on the strap interior, then fold the bottom edge of the Strap Exterior material up and
press to stick it onto the glue area. Fold the top edge of the excess strap material over the cut
edge of the bottom edge (the part that is stuck with the glue to the strap insides) and fold about
½” of the raw edge inside and over the cut edge of the fabric. Use a Clover Wonder Clip to
hold the fabric in position.

4. Using a 3.5mm to 4.5mm zig zag stitch, secure the loose edge of the strap material in place to
the strap. If you would like to add more detailed stitching you may do so at this time.

5. Turn the outside of the bag right side out. Insert the lining into the tote bag with the right side
of the lining fabric to the inside of the back.

6. Fold both the top edges of the lining and the outer material down ½”. Matching the side
seams, hold the lining and the outer fabric together with Clover Wonder Clips. Match the
centers of the front outer to the front lining piece, and do the same for the back, securing them
with a Clover Wonder Clip.

7. Estimate 2.5 to 3” to the left and right of the front center of the bag on both the front and the
back of the tote and insert the raw edge of the handles into the bag between the front and
lining with about 1 inch of the strap ends inside. Secure with a Clover wonder clip or two for
each strap end, being sure that your straps are not twisted.

8. Using a 4.0 mm stitch, topstitch around the entire opening of the tote, backstitching over the
areas where the handles are inserted and going slow if you have used the Soft And Stable to
firm up the tote.

9. Trim any loose or visible threads and your tote is complete! Fill with treats or anything else that
makes your heart happy!

These totes are so useful! You can use them as Trick or Treat bags, gift bags, or to fill with other

Cuddle gifts for anyone who needs a little extra softness!
