This week our National Educator Teresa Coates will be sharing her tips and tricks for the Puppy Dog Pete stuffed animal, one of Funky Friends Factory’s most popular (and simple) patterns.

Recommended fabrics and notions for sewing a dog stuffed animal

These products can be substituted for whatever you have on hand, but here is what Teresa recommends for her Puppy Dog Pete stuffie tutorial:

Fabric Requirements:

• 1/2 yd. Cuddle® 3 Brown
• 1/4 yd. Luxe Cuddle^® Frosted Shaggy Brown/Beige
• 10” x 10” scrap Cuddle® 3 Black 

Notions & Supplies:

• 1/2” or 12mm safety eyes
• 90/14 stretch machine needle —SCHMETZ
• Craft knife — OLFA
• Embroidery floss
• Fabric clips — Clover
• Felt tip marker or ballpoint pen
• Hand sewing needle
• Long, flower head pins — Clover
• Micro-serrated scissors — Karen Kay Buckley, Famore or Kai
• Point turner — Clover
• Polyester fiberfill — Fairfield
• Polyester thread —Metrosene by Mettler
• Puppy Dog Pete sewing pattern — Funky Friends Factory
• Rotary cutter and mat —OLFA
• Walking foot

Tips for sewing a dog stuffed animal with Cuddle® minky fabric: 

• If you’re new to making stuffed animals, Pete is a great place to start with big pieces and no need to resize. 
• The Luxe Cuddle® Frosted Shaggy for the ears is super cute, though you can use any coordinating Luxe Cuddle® or Cuddle® print.
• Using a quality polyester stuffing will make your puppy extra soft without any lumps and bumps.
• Make sure to transfer all markings to the fabric — you’ll want them as you are sewing it together.
• Pin perpendicularly for the seams, using only the first half of the flower head pins to keep the pieces tightly together and to allow easy removal of the pins. You’ll be using a lot of them!
• Use a point turner or crochet hook to push out seams in ears. If using Luxe Cuddle® Frosted Shaggy, be sure to pull out the fibers that get stuck in the seams. It takes some time, but the end result is worth it.
