Video Tutorial: How to Sew a Robe (Klassic Kimono Sewing Tutorial)

No matter if you’re a new sewist or have been sewing for a long time, sewing a robe is a must-try (at least once)! It’s a great way to test your skills, be creative and make something you can enjoy for years to come.

This week, as part of our popular Sew Together Tuesday series, our National Educator Teresa Coates shares her tips on how to sew a robe. A handmade robe makes a great gift for friends and loved ones, or just sew one for yourself to enjoy lounging around the house after a warm shower or sitting outside on a chilly summer evening.

Here Teresa makes it easy by listing everything you’ll need to sew a robe, her tips to keep in mind while sewing and her video tutorial.

Fabrics and notions you’ll need to sew a robe

These products can be substituted for whatever you have on hand, but here is what Teresa recommends for her robe tutorial*:

• 3 1/2 yards of fabric (terry cloth, Embrace® double gauze, Cuddle® or Luxe Cuddle®)
• 1 yard of coordinating fabric for trim and belt (terry cloth, waffle cloth, cotton print, Embrace® double gauze, Cuddle® or Luxe Cuddle®)
• Klassic Kimono Robe Pattern by Indygo Junction
• Coordinating polyester thread
• 90/14 Stretch needle (Cuddle®) or 80/12 Universal (other fabrics)
• Rotary cutter or scissors
• Long, flower head pins
• Serger (optional)

Keep these tips in mind when sewing a robe

• When using terry cloth, serge all your edges of each piece before starting to sew.
• When using Embrace®, serge your edges before or after you have sewn the seams.
• When using Cuddle® and/or Luxe Cuddle®, you don't need to serge at all.
• Mix textures and colors to add interest to your robe.
• Some of the seams will be bulky when using terry cloth or Luxe Cuddle®, so you may need to hand turn the hand crank on your sewing machine.
• Use a walking foot with the Cuddle®, Luxe Cuddle® or terry cloth for easiest sewing.
