No Mistakes... Just Character: Learning to Accept Imperfections

That’s because Cuddle® isn’t cotton—it’s a knit. Some Cuddle® fabrics have more stretch than others, while some are extra plush and dense. And yes, those super-plush fabrics can be a little challenging when you’re first getting started.

Your Cuddle® Support Squad Is Ready

If you run into a snag—literally or figuratively—you don’t have to figure it out alone.

The Shannon Fabrics website has a fantastic Learning Center filled with resources to help you along the way, including Tip Sheets, Free Patterns, Sew Together Live, Tutorials, and more.

There’s also the Facebook group I Love Cuddle® Fabric!, where Cuddle® Ambassadors regularly share advice, answer questions, and offer plenty of encouragement. I’ve personally reached out to Cuddle® Ambassadors when something wasn’t working the way I expected, and they were able to help me work through it.

And that’s one of the best things about the Cuddle® community: people genuinely want to help. Whether someone is sharing a finished project, demonstrating a new technique, or asking how to get past a particularly stubborn sewing hurdle, we all learn from one another.

So if you’re stuck, just ask! There’s no prize for struggling alone.

Give Yourself Permission to Be Imperfect

As sewers, we can be our own toughest critics.

We’ll finish a beautiful project, step back, and immediately notice the one seam that isn’t perfectly straight. Meanwhile, everyone else is admiring the colors, the design, and the fact that we made something amazing with our own two hands!

Of course, perfection matters in certain settings, such as quilt competitions. But everyday sewing? That’s a different story.

Cuddle® is wonderfully forgiving. Take an Infinity Scarf, for example. Maybe your seam has a few waves. Maybe it isn’t perfectly straight. Once the scarf is wrapped around someone’s neck, chances are no one will ever notice.

And if they do, just call it character!

Real Life Is Not a Quilt Show

I sell my Cuddle® creations at craft fairs, and one of my favorite things is watching customers discover Cuddle® for the first time.

Many people in my area aren’t familiar with all the textures, colors, and designs available. When they walk up to my booth, they touch a Cuddle® throw—and then they usually touch it again.

That’s the magic.

My throws aren’t quilt-show specimens, and my customers aren’t looking for perfection. They’re experiencing how soft, beautiful, and cozy Cuddle® feels. They’re imagining wrapping themselves in it or giving it to someone they love.

And honestly, that’s what matters.

A Little Character Is Okay

When I teach a class, I often have students who are nervous about making mistakes. I remind them that Cuddle® is forgiving.

Maybe the seam on the back is a little wavy. Grab a stiletto, fluff the fabric, and keep going. Chances are nobody will notice it.

Maybe the finished project has a little “character.”

That’s okay.

In fact, I like to think that those little imperfections are part of the story. You made it. You learned something. You kept going. And now you have something beautiful to show for it.

And if you’d rather keep the secret of that slightly wonky seam between you and your sewing machine, that’s okay, too.

The goal isn’t to create something perfect.

The goal is to create something you love.

So give yourself permission to learn, experiment, and maybe even make a few mistakes along the way.

Because with Cuddle®, there are no mistakes... just character.
