Cuddle DIY Doll Clothing Garment Bag

Written by Ellen Mickelson | Apr 11, 2016 11:00:01 AM

Polly here from the Pieces by Polly blog with a free pattern for making your own hanging garment bag for your 18" doll using Cuddle Fabric from Shannon Fabrics.  This is part of a series of DIY Doll tutorials in partnership with Pieces by Polly, Shannon Fabrics, and Fairfield World and you'll want to check them out as well as check back for future projects.

Besides being so adorable and super soft, they're also really quick to make.

Time: About 1/2 an hour

Skill: Beginner

Materials:

  • 1/2  yard Cuddle Fabric.  We chose Embossed Star Cuddle® Fuchsia and Embossed Heart Cuddle® Lilac.  The Cuddle 3, Cuddle prints, and Embossed Cuddle with the shorter pile definitely work better for these than the longer piled Cuddle.
  • 14" Coordinating Zipper
  • Coordinating Thread
  • Pins
  • Sewing Machine
  • Rotary Cutter and Cutting Mat or Fabric scissors
  • Printed Pattern
Instructions:
Lay out your pattern pieces.  You will need one back piece and two front pieces.  Note that the front pieces are slightly larger than half of the back piece.
Pin the front pieces together at the center.  Stitch closed with a basting stitch (usually the longest stitch on your machine.)  DO NOT backstitch at the ends.  You want a long stitch because we'll be removing all these stitches in a bit.

Open your front pieces up FACE DOWN and spread open the seam.  With the zipper centered, pin the zipper in place.
Stitch along both sides of the zipper about 1/4 inch from the zipper.  A zipper foot is helpful if you have one, but not necessary.
Use a seam ripper or small scissors to remove your basting stitches and open up your zipper.  Leave your zipper mostly open.

Pin your front and back pieces together.  You always want to use plenty of pins when sewing with Cuddle fabrics.

Sew around your garment back with a 1/2 inch seam allowance.  Do NOT sew the flat part at the top of the garment bag.  Clip the lower corners.

Turn your garment bag right side out.  Fold the raw edges at the top of the bag under 1/2 an inch and sew securely down to hem.  (No need to double fold the hem, since Cuddle fabrics don't fray.

And you're all ready to use it!
